  • Thanks John for the memories. I was there fresh from PFAL in KS. So many memorable saints and so much irreplaceable music. How do I see the next half?
  • John--It is incredible and thank you soooo much. I was at that event and the video brought so many sweet memories as to why all of us were there. This will no doubt bring joy to many good people. It solidfies for me that our commitment at that time was clearly righteous and what stands before us can only better. Thanks again.---Regards, Phil Dean
  • Truly a great work of art..for anyone who was there this brings back awesome wonderful loving memories. I remember watching this movie so many times on the WOW field. Thanks for uploading it John.
  • Watching this, I had a Barbara Streisdand moment "Memories.......of the Way we were". My first ROA was 1973 when I went WOW to Puerto Rico. I was SO young, just 21, so nieve, so "white bread" from NE Ohio. BUt I was committed, involved and had such an open heart for God and His people.

It can be that way again..... yep, pass the tissue....Thank you, John, from the bottom of my heart!

  • Janis, indeed it was a different era in TWI back then. Night & day! No wonder thousands per year were attracted. It was fun and exciting and we had an agenda. But it was not perfect even back in the good old days. We grew older and grew up. I liken this period to a spititual summer of love. The ideals were awesome but in practice it failed for a variety of reasons on many levels. No one person or one concept can be blamed in my opinion. Regardless, it had an impact that will never be forgotten.
  • Thank you John, I know this was not an easy task to complete. I arrived in 12-80. This was the first time I viewed this work. Many many many things went through my mind.

The first is what freedom they expressed. To some guy smoking a ciggie in a teaching to the freedom to dress, express, feel and just live. How tragic that it this beloved Way Ministry became such a straitjacket to those who are still zealous for the law.

This was the heart I was acquainted with and this heart of when God makes you free you are free indeed is what I carry with me as I go along the way.

  • I agree Gale. That's why I said it was "the best ROA ever". It was small and before "things" began to slowly go awry. I camped at Rock ONLY once. It was "hotel city" for me from then on. I am NOT a morning person! Hey, I think you look better now than you did then. Looked like you had great fun. Must have been nice to be there with your family members.
  • I just read Ted's comment - really, 1,000 people? I'm old, memories change, it seemed like a couple hundred. It must be more though, I stand corrected.
  • Wow, this really brings back memories. It was my first ROA. There was me, my brother, sister and mom and Columbus believers (we had moved to Columbus from NY in '71). This was my first time "camping." I did not like the little tents we brought and we were awoken every morning to "Beautiful Ohio" loud and clear at 6:00 a.m. For a teen who routinely slept in until 11 or noon, that was definitely not a blessing. I still hate that song.

I don't know how I ended up all over that film, but I did. I wasn't trying. It was really a small group of people, maybe 200 of us so I think everyone there ended up in it somewhere, and, I think it remained sunny the whole time. It was my favorite of all rocks. TWI was still young, we were young, and the music was great and I met a lot of great people from all over the country. To me, all of the later ones were more regimented. This one was like a little Woodstock. It was great fun.
  • The Rock of Ages 72 video that John Richeson put together is truly a work of art, and should be a blessing to all that view it.

The first Rock of Ages was in 1971 and was on The Way grounds across the Jordan (a small creek). The stage was on two long, flat-bed truck trailers. About a thousand people were there. On Saturday night, all the musicians did a concert at The American Legion in Minster, Ohio. The town folk were sure that there would be a riot, so the local police had a fenced in area built to put all of us in should we get out of hand. ha ha ha.
Needless to say, no arrests were made.

By the way, the one that named this gathering together was my First Corps brother, Rev. Mike Smith.

Now as I look at this Rock of Ages 72 video, which was only one year after the first ROA, the growth and heart of The Way ministry was on its way. The youth of this country was what made The Way's outreach grow by leaps and bounds. When I think of all those wonderful, young people that decided to go WOW, it still brings tears of thankfulness to my eyes.

If you were not involved with The Way in 1972, please take a good look at this video. At the time, those people loved God with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength. From the Rock of Ages 72 mightily grew The Word of God and prevailed even unto this day.

Thank you John, for your labor of love in putting this together.

    Ted
