About Me
Since 1985, I've travelled around the US in a camper listening to questions ordinary people had about PFAL, The Way, VPW and Cris Geer. After a couple years of that, I began to realize I was being asked to read and evaluate books at a rate beyond my limits. I was pushing age 40 with no income, no insurance, no nothin'. On a trip through Idaho, I had a Damascus Road experience. The Lord called me to be a voice to this nation and to other nations, bringing a messege of peace and healing.
I realized that I didn't know how to speak to anyone but Way people. I needed a standard, theological vocabulary so I sold the camper and enrolled in Denver (Conservative Baptist) Seminary. Learned a bunch from Dr. Bruce Damerest, who earned his Ph. D. in England under F.F. Bruce. Unfortunately, by the fifth term in the Master of Divinity track, I realized that the school believed that a woman who preaches is a disgrace to her husband or, if she's not married, a disgrace to her father.
So, I transferred to The Iliff School of Theology in Denver. I actually found
three faculty who believed in the God of the Bible, and two who believed that
once upon a time a man named Jesus, Son of God, lived on earth.
I finished the M. Div. (master of divinity) degree at Iliff (a United Methodist Seminary) and won the preaching prize there. I had been invited to preach there before I was a student and was invited after graduation--but never as a student. I've always thought that winning the preaching prize was evidence that a good preacher knows when to keep his mouth shut. Over the next several years, I became ordained a Methodist minister and am now serving a 5th local congregation. In 2005, I was board, so went to study at University of Oxford's "Summer Programme in Theology". It was difficult, and more fun than I'd had in a very long time. I went again in 2006, enrolled in their Doctor of Ministry track through the Summer Programme, and have finished the academic work. Now, I'm just finishing my exit project. The Title of my D. Min. project is: "Manifesatations of Holy Spirit: Word of Knowledge, Word of Wisdom, and Speaking in Tongues." My hope is to offer some definitions for these things that actualy make sense. Recieved the Doctor of Ministry in Applied Ministries in May, 2008 from the Graduate Theological Foundation in Indiana, which
is afiliated with The Vatican and Oxford. Liked Oxford and stirred up a few classes there. Haven't been to The Vatican yet, but both Pope J2P2 and this new guy get on my nerves, so who knows--might stop by sometime and spread the joy.
My Interests
Occasionally, I play golf. My dominating interest the past few years has been finishing the D. Min. degree. I've had occasion to do some travelling the past dozen or so years: studied the great medieval cathedral at Chartre, France; summer studies at Oxford; a driving trip through Scotland; and a family visit to Denmark. Met some very nice people with all kinds of questions about faith, meaning, and God.
Employment or Career
1985-1990 Lived in a truck.
1990 - 1993 Went back to School
1993 - Present United Methodist Minister
2009 - Doctor of Ministry Official Title: The Reverand Doctor, but my friends just call me "The".
Music I Like
I sing with a 35 voice "long-hair" chorale in Denver and enjoy it. We do classical religious and folk songs from around the world in the original languages.
Books I Like
I love mysteries. Usually read through one writer's publications on a run,
then switch to the next guy. This past month or two I've been reading about what a chucklehead theology Mormonism is... Fawn Brodie "No Man Knows My History" ; Jon Krakauer "Under the Banner of Heaven" ; and two by Michael Quinn about Mormon Hierarchy.
Television I like
History Channell
Science Channell
Discovery Channell
Fox News
CNN News
Movies I like
"Sling Blade"
Don't much like chick-flicks. As a minister of peace all day, I like to go home at night and relax with a glass of wine and lots of explosions.
Sports Teams I like
I saw some Danish hand ball and I liked it.
I'm also a curling fan.
College and US National sports have lost interest to me. Too much money, too many drugs, too many commercials, not enough actual sportsmanship. Boring.

I will be heading out to Denver in two weeks, driving my daughter, Cailey to College. She chose Colorado Christian University over so many others in order to be surrounded by faith rather than drugs and drunkenness. I want to see you when I get there, if you are around, God willing. Send me an email -- stevenbudlong@earthlink.net
I can hear your voice and it makes me smile while reading your text. You came to Maine in your camper shortly after our exit from TWI. I have thought of you often over the years. You gave me hope that life would continue outside the Way...and indeed it has, in a wonderfilled way. Bless,Robin
and yes, i'm still playing rock and roll, out in the beery, sweaty trenches. the real rock and roll experience, i think, is about thinking less--getting out of the way, almost, and letting it happen. i'm still working at it. the best stuff is when you can step back and watch yourself doing something you'd swear is beyond your ability. tiny, shiny moments, the kind that last for seconds on end.
it's amazing to me that you remembered that chris geer stuff. I didn't!
i still wish i'd caught on sooner, or acted on what my insides were screaming at me. i guess lots of us do.
i'd like to hear what YOU'RE thinking these days. i never knew you well, but well enough to know you're a good thinker.
I read somewhere that you are finishing your exit project on the manifestations. I would be very interested in seeing some of your work..
One of my fondest memories of the old class was when VPW was in England or someplace and a minister said if you give me five minutes I could prove you wrong about what you are teaching but there was a scholar he was talking to that said something to the effect that we would need several weeks to discuss it - the point is that he was contrasting the two - I got quite a chuckle out of that whenever I heard it.
