Posted by John Richeson on August 27, 2012 at 1:52am in In Memoriam
This message was emailed to me today:
"Our beloved Bernita Jess who did so much of the Aramaic work has passed (last Thursday, August 24) and is awaiting our Lord's return."
Please post more information as well as any pictures. Both Bernita and her husband George were wonderful people.

"Both Bernita and her husband George were wonderful people." Yes. Faithful, genuine. I knew them both for many years. They were "the real McCoy."
I wholeheartedly agree Ken. The world needs more people like them.
Bernita was always so excited by the Aramaic work going on at the University of Chicago while I was studying there (with Arthur Voobus and Dennis Pardee). She couldn't always wrap her mind around the idea that Syriac was merely an early version of the Christian Scriptures, but she listened and tried. She was always excited to hear what else I had "come up with" and it always seemed that God had something special just for her when she'd call or write.
I'll see her and tell her the latest (and it's exciting, BTW) when "we all get together"...it'll be that day of rejoicing.

I spent a few months my last year in residence "working" for her on what became the Aramaic NT Concordance. She was a blast and loved God's Word. Every day I looked forward to going to the trailer and manually scanning the Syriac NT for words.
So sorry to hear of Benita's passing away .She was a great lady and added so very much to the research dept.
She and her husband George were two of my favorite people while I was with The Way.
So many of the old crew are no longer with us,
