How Many Were In The Way Corps?

How many people participated in The Way corps program? including the very small Way Corps groups of today? List the groups you know of and the number of people who were in it. We can total as we go. I think you might find the total number surprising. As for me.....hmmm 7th Corps...It seems like we started with a group of about 350. Some left the first few months or the first year so I think a figure of 300 would be safe. Others will know more specifically.

  • Well those 4 are welcome here. They can be proud too. They perhaps hold the distinction of smallest Way Corps group. I wonder what the largest one was? 12th or one of those under John Lynn I think.
  • I actually think the current group graduating this year in August will be the 37th Corps.

    2000 - 28th & 29th
    2001 - 30th
    2002 - 31st
    2003 - 32nd
    2004 - 33rd
    2005 - 34th
    2006 - 35th
    2007 - 36th
    2008 - 37th

Now, if I can only take the time to look at the Way Mags for each year and give you a number on those graduating groups. I remember one had like 4 people in it!! Talk about a small picture. It was like mostly the Board of Directors, Gunnison leadership staff, and the few Corps grads.. Really sad!
  • Are you saying the current group is called Way Corps 36?? Wow!
  • Numbers now days are really really extremely low. And there is no Family Corps program, the Families join the rest of us. The numbers are more like groups of 5 - 8 people today.

I was in residence from 1999-2001, back to back years since that was the new format for the second time (98-2000, 29th Corps was the first back to back and graduated with the handful of 28th Corps at the same time, since they had 28th do the old program and started the 29th right after with the new format)..

I was in the 30th Corps! Small, barely 24 of us folks I think, but seemed like a resurge of people... You know, even after only 6 years, you would guess I should remember these things, but I don't! Our elder Corps had ~8, our younger had ~14...
  • The fourth corps was the first corps to have an interim year. We started in Sept of 1973 and graduated in July of 1976.
  • Awesome thank you for this info, Karl. So lets see.......adding all your figures above gives us 2,434. adding in an average of 250 for each of the "not released" years you have listed gives us an additional 750 which I think is conservative. Now we have 3,184.

Now lets add an average of 75 for each year of the Family Corps, again a conservative guess based on what you state above. THat gives us 1,050 additional.

Grand total of those who GRADUATED from the Way Corps through 1988 = 4,234.

    There is more

1.) What about all those who were in The Way Corps past 1988 even to this present year almost 20 years later? Go on the low side.....I'll guess at an AVERAGE of 40 per year including Family Corps and kids of. age. That would be an additional 800.

2.) What about those like my friend Richard who were ousted or left before they had a chance to graduate? Cmon. You have to include them too. Richard was asked to leave a month before he graduated. Our guideline for this site is that you have to have been in for at least a year. So if we say lets include people who finished at least 2 years in the Way Corps. I bet you would get another 1,000. It does not count if they wentr in anotther time in another Corps. Lets just guess at 750 to be conservative.

Adding items 1 and 2 to our grand total above.............. 5,784 people were in the Way Corps.

I feel this is a low figure and really could be as high as 6,500. I know in our Corps the 7th Corps, we started with 350??? and you say we graduated with 279. Same with 6th Corps.

Anyone else have anything to add?
  • Here are some figures from my book, which I got from John Juedes and Douglas Morton, "From Vesper Chimes to The Way International."

As for the Way Corps, it plugged along with a double-digit yearly membership until
1975, when the 6th Corps suddenly quadrupled the number of people going in residence.
The yearly membership remained in the 200s or 300s for the next decade, except for two or
three years when The Way didn’t release numbers, presumably because they weren’t very
large. Here are the numbers it did release.

CORPS ... YEAR GRADUATED ... NUMBER OF GRADUATES

    “Zero Corps” ... Did not ... 0 of 9
    1st Corps ... 1972 ... 9
    2nd Corps ... 1973 ... 19
    3rd Corps ... 1974 ... 25
    4th Corps ... 1975 ... 68
    5th Corps ... 1977* ... 70
    6th Corps ... 1978 ... 275
    7th Corps ... 1979 ... 279
    8th Corps ... 1980 ... 207
    9th Corps ... 1981 ... Not released
    10th Corps ... 1982 ... 299
    11th Corps ... 1983 ... 326
    12th Corps ... 1984 ... Not released
    13th Corps ... 1985 ... Not released
    14th Corps ... 1986 ... 296
    15th Corps ... 1987 ... 360+ (including Family Corps)
    16th Corps ... 1988 ... 201

*No Corps graduated in 1976 because the two-year program was made a four-year
program, with an apprentice year and an interim year.

Except for the 1987 figure, these numbers don’t include the Family Corps, which
got its start in 1974. The graduation totals weren’t released consistently, but those that were
released ranged from 35 to 152, usually including the children.

    Cheers,
    Karl
  • I once figured up that going through the 1st year of the 10th, then starting over again in the 14th, I knew most of the 8th &12th Corps and most of the 16th. I knew over 1000 people by name and face. Not counting the people I met at the ROA. But I knew only a handful of 9th, 11th, 13th, and 15th because it wasn't possible to know more.
  • I well remember that the 8th corps started with 257 for the first year in residence. I know we were smaller than the 6th and 7th before us, and the 9th and 10th after us. In fact, I remember also that starting number of 350 for the 7th corps. However, I dont know the finishing number.
  • Yes, David or Linda. I would be interested in those lists so I can compile numbers of each those groups. If you could send them to me electronically I would be most grateful. You can send then to me at jrich7@verizon.net.

If you do not have them electronically please fax copies to me at my home fax (813) 920-6145
