Way Corp group(s) I was in
14th Corps
Where I live
Los Gatos, California
About Me
In The Way from 1980 to 1987, I used to be Carl Collar before I adopted the correct spelling of my ancestral name. I have two sons, 17 and 11, live in a great town and have a rewarding job. And I still dream I'm back in the Way Corps.
My Interests
I've written a few books, fiction and nonfiction, none published except the self-published "The Cult That Snapped: A Journey Into The Way International." I like to run and play tennis, am currently obsessed with online chess and have a strange fascination with Bible problems.
Employment or Career
Deputy graphics director at the San Jose Mercury News, where I've worked for 18 years. I do maps, charts, histories, illustrations and all kinds of
news graphics. Love the job because it's something different every day.
Music I Like
Next phase, new wave, dance craze, anyways, it's still rock 'n' roll to me. (Don't tell anyone, but I also like Eminem.) Occasional karaoke nut.
Books I Like
Anything by Henry Miller, Elmore Leonard, Carl Hiassen. Also an avid reader of books about the Bible: "The Harlot by the Side of the Road," "Misquoting Jesus," "The Five Gospels."
Television I like
"Family Guy," "Simpsons," "American Dad," "Futurama." Yep, I get all grown up and all I want to do is watch cartoons.
Movies I like
Mel Gibson may be a jerk, but I loved "Apocalypto." Ditto the recent "King Kong." And "The Departed," and "Babel," and "Pan's Labyrinth." Not to mention "The Devil's Backbone" and "Amores Perros."
Sports Teams I like
S.F. Giants, San Jose Sharks, USC Trojans, and I'll always have a place in my heart for the Arkansas Razorbacks.
Comments
Looking forward to reading it. I just finished reading Kris Skedgell's book last week. I was in the 8th. Corps with her. Do you know if I can get it on my Kindle? (new Christmas present).
My apologies for never getting back to you. Long story. No excuse. Sorry about your dad too. We should talk sometime. Peter
I appreciated the dedication too - "For the thousands of good people who have been followers of The Way." I'm privileged to count a few of them as friends.
I will be dropping you a line from my personal e-mail, pross72284@aol.com. Be on the look out.
To clear the record I check this site with such irregularity that I should probably add more fiber to my web diet.
Thanks for your comments. Your humor is wonderful. Just as I remember it.
Interesting that you would mention my overloarding. Great description. I have thought of it more as dominance as compensation for other missing parts....
Truthfully, what I have come to realize through the years (thanks to God's grace, my loving wife, a great therapist and wonderful pharmacueticals) is that my largest pull to the Way was my desire for a black and white world where all the answers were clear. Coming off of the "field" from my interim year and being made a branch coordinator provided me an opprotunity to love and serve other members of the Body. While I hopefully did accomplish some of that, I also had some twisted understanding that I was required to force others into that same black and wihte box.
I now realize that we are all one in Christ, where there is neither male nor female, slave, nor free. Just gray. Lots of wonderful holy gray. And that is where the richness of life comes in.
It doesn't make you a better leader, a better servant, a better person to have your towel on your bed rack, on the floor, or on what did you call them? Oh yes. A towel rack. What does matter is where your heart is. Our only duty is to love God with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and our neighbor as our selves. Very simple, and complex, and neat, and odd all at once. It can't be overthought, but it can be explored and lived. So much in that tiny phrase. God first, me next, others after, kind of. I can't help another if I am not whole, but I can never be whole and can only become whole by loving God and allowing myself to be loved by God and loving God is demonstrated by serving others, which helps make them more whole in my unwholeness. I love it.
By the way I bought two sweaters last week. One is cashmere, barn red. And only $25 on sale.
