Click on this attached PDF for complete article. I scanned this from the old 1971 Life Magazine I have. I combined the main photo from 2 pages. I added the cover of the magazine and the table of contents as well. Some of our members are in this article such as Kristen Skedgell, John Seiffer, Tim Bishop, Allison Heaney, Dana Ranyak and a few others. Very Groovy people indeed!

  • Thanks John for putting this article here.
I bought one of these last year on EBAY - Allison Heany was the one that came down to RI and started the work there - especially at Brown University and eventually the University or Rhode Island where I got witnessed to. So Allison coming down from Rye got the word moving in Rhode Island and Mass - a big Way Home on the beach housed many of us
Ellen Fowler - Allison Heany - Mike Norcross - The DeNenno's from Brown - Steve Strezpek - Joel Burke, Paullette Picard and her sister - Island Weiss, Debra Sleeper - well the names go on - and Allison was the reason for a lot of it. Well it would not have happened without Rye NY/

I really liked your comments too - about the time we spent together the bonds are still there even after all these years.
I liked also your comment on the balance aspect - moving on with education and career alongside - well I liked all of your comments/

I will do my best to contact some of them and tell them about your cruise - that would be great to get them on Destiny - what a great name -

  • Well, that's the first time I ever read that article. Thanks John. I too am thankful for the good that I learned, yet am sad that the temptation "such as is common to man" did it's usual destruction in the later years. But, that aspect is nothing new to any group of well meaning people I suppose. I do not regret my time being involved, and cherish the fine friendships that I gained when involved. Many of you are here at this site. My life was definitely changed by the Lord Jesus Christ when my prayer in night time desperation was answered the very next day when a radiant WOW came to work where I worked, and for that I am forever thankful...

  • WoW, John.

This is awesome. I accepted Christ right on the spot after reading this article. Months later i serendipitously ran into an old friend who had hooked up with a group of believers living on a farm - "The Way"

    Thank you SO much!

  • "But I cannot throw away or ignore or discard 12 years of my life....."

Rob, I feel the same way about the 26 years I was in TWI. I do not feel taken advantage of nor do I feel I wasted those years. But I totally understand your thinking about that. Really, I do. Rather than ignore the experiences or pretend it didn't happen, I choose rather to embrace it.

As it turns out, one of the great benefits of our experience were the people we were in contact with and grew to love and respect as friends. It is fond memories of people and my relationships with them that I remember far more than bible verses or great teaching sessions or fellowships.

There was a bond, no doubt. In my opinion, that is a priceless thing which overshadows some of the negative aspects that came later. They pale in comparison.
  • Young, trusting, full of anticipation, and hope.
Too bad they took advantage of us. We were idealistic, and young.
I feel like the important thing to remember is that Jesus was resurrected, and He is alive and with us.
I really thought I could spend my entire life in that Ministry. It was not to be.
But, I am still thankful for those who I got to meet, and those who "volunteered" that I have not yet met. And I mean you.
It is a heartbreaker in a lot of ways.
But I cannot throw away or ignore or discard 12 years of my life.....it was good chunk of it.

  • Like Charlene, I still have a hard copy of the magazine. It was a wonderful time - my first real introduction to God and his son. Many of us were not only saved and enlightened, but delivered from drugs and shown our identity in Christ. If some later strayed or, made unwise decisions that is not a reflection on God or His Word. I still pray for an open door to reach the youth of today - the world still needs to be turned upside down!
  • I think it was a good thing for some of us to turn to compared to some of the alternatives like drugs and such. It was the beginning of quite a journey.

I was from quite the "opposite side of the tracks" from Rye. My upbringing couldn't have been more opposite. So for me it was like taking a giant step forward. I still do not regret it.

If it were my kids today, however, I would probably have been somewhat skeptical especially if they had put it before higher education or career. I would have tried to encourage participation in both. But that's just materialistic me. I would have been a little worried if they did not communicate frequently. With cell phones and texting it might have been easier.
  • What a walk down memory lane. We were all so young...and so convinced of everything that man taught us. The good news is so many of us are still involved in various avenues of ministry! Thanks, John for reproducing this for all of us to enjoy.
