Recently while going through the In Memoriam site for Way Corps members who have fallen asleep, I failed to see an entry for my late sister-in-law, Phyllis (Warren) Murdock, who passed away in 1990. I decided to pay tribute to Phyllis who was a member of the 10th Corps.

Phyllis Jean Warren was born January 20, 1951 in Kistler, West Virginia, and later her family moved to Hamilton, Ohio where she graduated from Garfield High School. She accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her savior at an early age and devoted her life to Christian service. Those who were privileged to know Phyllis will recall her passion for life and her zeal for God and His people. In fulfilling her call to serve, she ministered in Ohio, Washington, DC, Atlanta, Georgia, and elsewhere while affiliated with The Way International.

On June 17, 1984 she was joined in marriage to Staff Sergeant Duane Murdock, originally from Baltimore, Maryland. Shortly after their marriage, Phyllis and Duane lived in Bicester, England, where Duane was stationed in the Air Force, and they were a part of The Way of Great Britain. On September 22, 1990 Phyllis passed away following a brief illness, and she now awaits the return of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

As a member of the 10th Way Corps, Phyllis also sang with Way Productions and was featured on a number of songs, including “Keep on Moving On” and the ever-popular “I Know Who Holds Tomorrow.” Thanks to Phyllis's 10th Corps Brother Michael Kasiac, there are recordings of Phyllis sing these two songs in her own inimitable style in a reply posted below.

Without question, there are times when words seem inadequate to express the depths of sorrow and sense of loss that come with the passing of someone who is close to us. Many times during such moments I think of the lyrics to a song by Babbie Mason, and they express my sentiments during those difficult times. May all those who have experienced the loss of a friend or family member, such as Phyllis, be strengthened and encouraged by the words of “Trust His Heart,” a song popularized by Babbie Mason, a contemporary Christian artist:

All things work for our good
though sometimes we can’t see how they could
struggles that break our hearts in two
sometimes blinds us to the truth

Our Father knows what’s best for us
His ways are not our own
So when your pathway grows dim, and you just can’t see Him
Remember you’re never alone

God is too wise to be mistaken
God is too good to be unkind
So when you don’t understand
When you don’t see His plan
When you can’t trace His hand
Trust His heart

He sees the master plan
And He holds our future in His hands
So don’t live as those who have no hope
All our hope is found in Him

We see the present clearly
But He sees the first and the last
And like a tapestry He’s weaving you and me to someday be just like Him

God is too wise to be mistaken
God is too good to be unkind
So when you don’t understand
When you don’t see His plan
When you can’t trace His hand
Trust His heart

He alone is faithful and true
He alone knows what is best for you
So when you don’t understand
When you don’t see His plan

When you can't trace His hand, trust His heart

  • Thank you, I loved Phyllis very much, she was a remarkably kind girl.
  • Dear Lonnell, I remember well Phyllis and Duane's time here in England.  They were a lovely couple and a great example of the love of God in manifestation.  Phyllis was thankful and just shed happiness all around her.  She found so many little ways to bless others, many unnoticed, I thought, but with great impact.

    I miss her still.

  • Phyllis was my room mate FL's of Ohio. she was a sweet girl, She showed me the Love of Christ, and was their for me as a friend and sister in Christ.
  • I never had the pleasure of meeting Phyllis, but I have fellowshiped with Duane since that time. I have never met a more loving man, and he gave much credit to Phyllis whenever I complimented him about his walk with God.

Duane's walk with God magnified His love to all he fellowshiped with and exemplied all that I knew. She has certainly left here with the imprint of God's love.

I have been touched by Phyllis by way of Duane. And yet, they would be the first to glorify God in that touch.

    Thanks Lonnell.
  • Thanks to Michael Kasiak, Phyllis's 10th Corps Brother, here are recordings of the two songs sung by Phyllis in her inimitable style. May they minister to all who listen with the truths they so beautifully express.

  • I also added "Keep On Moving On" to my profile, as song #6.
  • I am sorry to read this Lonnell. Phyllis, like my sister, was too young to be gone. But what an awesome tribute you have given in honor of Phyllis. I have added a link to this commentary on her name on this list which is located on the main page of this site:

    "In Memoriam"

Though Phyllis and out other friends are missed now, it will be a pleasure to see them once again some day.
  • Great sharing Lonnell. I went to Michael's page and listened to Phyllis sing that wonderful song, what a voice she had.
Thank you Michael for posting it, and Thank you Lonnell for sharing this wonderful tribute to your sister-in-law.
In a twinkling of an eye!
  • Thanks for sharing Lonnell. Wow, this is the first time I've heard of Phyllis's death. The last song you posted just blessed my heart.
  • Lonnell, thank you for posting this tribute. I was not aware. I have always remembered the way Phyllis sang "I Know Who Holds Tomorrow". It was unique. I could never get away from the tune as she sang it. Her voice was loving, gentle, and yet had power behind it. I finally dug up an old 10th Corps recording and digitized it. Anyone reading this can hear her singing this song on my profile page on this website (song #5).

What a joy to know we sill see her again. Joy unspeakable, indeed!
