Mark Hagerling's Music heard at the Olympics

From Mark Hagerling's (7th Corps) website: www.hagerling.com" "My music will be heard at the 2008 Olympics in China next month. I am finishing up some original music for Courtney King-Dye who will be representing the USA in the sport of dressage. She will be riding the great horse Harmony's Mythilus to this music as she competes in the Freestyle. Her score will be based in part on the appropriateness and quality of her music so it's an assignment I don't take lightly." Here is a sample: Music Sample for Dressage Competition We are proud of you Mark!

  • Congrats, Mark! We're all proud of you!
  • Coutney made it in. She is ranked 8th right now. So she will ride on Tuesday. It will happen between 7:15am and 11am EST which you can watch live at nbcolympics.com (if you have a fairly fast computer and internet connection). It will also be on TV. In my area it's from 6pm to 8pm on the Oxygen channel. You'd have to look it up in your area which you can do on nbcolympics.com also.
  • Still, even if it's not televised, Mark, its an awesome accomplishment. It is cool to see someone with musical abilities like yours. It was nice being in the 7th Corps with you and Jackie. Say hi to her for me.
  • I just happened to catch wind of this discussion. Thanks for your interest John. I should probably elaberate a little. That sample you linked to was for a previous dressage project a couple years ago for the 2006 world cup. That was an arrangement of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough". This project for the Olympics was a developing work as they often are. Some one started off splicing together pieces of recordings as a sort of medly that follows the various changes in the gait of the horse. They used music from Cat Steven's "Sad Lisa" and some other recordings. Can't remember the names. Finally they hired me to replace sections with more appropriate sounding music. In the end I wrote and produced about 4 of the 6 minutes. It still begins and ends with Cat Stevens "Sad Lisa". But even in the parts that I composed and orchestrated I tried to use hints of the Sad Lisa motif now and then.

I didn't know until recently that only the top 15 scorers will even get to ride to their Freestyle. (The freestlye is the ride with music.) So it may not even get heard. I think there are 60 something horses/riders to start out with. If Courtney King is in the top 15 at the end of Saturday then she will get to ride her Freestyle on Tuesday Aug. 19th at the Individual Dressage Final Grand Prix Freestyle. This should be broadcast live on TV. Not sure which channel yet. Maybe the Oxygen channel. It's also streamed live on the web at www.nbcolympics.com
  • Thought I heard strains of Ain't No Mountain High Enough.

I suppose I am gonna have to see the performance to see how the rider handles the horse.

    It's well done!
