Ties in perfectly with Romans chapter 8, with respect to the carnal mind vs. the spiritual mind. Where do you want to be, death or life? Hmmm...let me think...
Romans 8:6 - For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
The "old man" is dead and buried. We can choose to keep thinking like that old dead guy used to think (and therefore act) when he was alive, or we can choose to think as we are now designed and directed to think: spiritually! Wow...tough choice, huh? In case we forget where our choice will lead, we can read the whole chapter of Romans 8 and see exactly where we are in our thinking (behavior follows thinking) and return to the spiritual "minding" if we have gotten off track.
Sweet, simple and to the point...no contradictions in God's Word! Thanks again, Ken!
This is one of my favorite truths from the Word, our "old man" which is dead, and we are now a new creation in Christ, a “new man”, once we confess Ro. 10:9 & 10. It is now Christ in us the hope of glory. We are now a spiritual being, a body now that has more than just body and soul but one that has body, soul and spirit. It's our connection with God through His son Jesus Christ that joins us together. That's why once I became born again I believed I had a new life, a new beginning, a fresh start. At this point is where the work began for me, I was now a spiritual being but my mind was not automatically renewed, I had to change my way of thinking to a new way of thinking, I wanted claim all those promises that God's Word had given me as his son, I wanted to believe I had what the Word said I had, and that I could do and be what the Word of God said I could do and be. I was a son of God now; I was a new creature in Christ, one who would walk in the light as He is in the light.
Ephesians 5:8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
I still remember it being one of my greatest challenges as a teenager, “changing my thinking” what was that all about? Thank God for Howard (Howie) Yeremian Jr. He continued to teach me the practical application of what that meant until I finally got it. I had never heard that before, that I could actually change my thinking.
Part of the excitement for me way back when was that once I was taught the truths from the Word in the fellowship I was attending, I realized that I had become born again as a young child, and that God had His hand on my life way before I even knew what it meant to be a Son of God. He was watching over me, and working in my life for years before I ever realized what the riches of His Glory were. Our God is so good.
I believe it is a daily walk with God, sometimes minute by minute to change our thinking from what we hear vs. the Word in any given situation, for example our current economic situation, we can fear or we can believe what God's Word says, He will meet all of our needs.
Fears are nothing more than a state of mind.
Napoleon Hill
Phl 4:19
But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
… And…
Mal 3:10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.
He will fill up our lives with so many blessings as we trust Him. He fills our lives with blessings even when we don’t believe but when we believe and trust, I believe this is when we will see the “exceeding abundantly above” really come into play in our lives, that’s when we fully trust.
Eph 3:20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,
Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
We are bombarded with so many of other people's thoughts on a daily basis that we must search the scriptures whether these things are so, and then be renewed in the spirit of our minds in order to see results in our lives. It doesn't just happen once we have become this new creation in Christ, which is why it is called our walk with God.
Deu 5:33 Ye shall walk in all the ways which the LORD your God hath commanded you, that ye may live, and that it may be well with you, and that ye may prolong your days in the land which ye shall possess.
Since this is true it still takes the renewed mind, which is a daily challenge for all of us, to live what the Word of God says.
Rom 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Col 3:15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
Once we trust in our God which starts in the mind, it’s that trusting in what His Word says that causes us to be peaceful, because we know that He will do what he says He will do, and we don’t have to be anxious as long as we continue to believe (which takes action) what His Word says:
Phl 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
Phl 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Blessings to you…
Thanks for your kind comment. My next posting will be a lot more specific to practical living in grace.
Bless.

This along with your study on “two natures” brings a clearer picture as to why we do what we do and how we can avoid doing what we would not.
In this I see parts of the mind/body conundrum. On this I need more time to think.
Thanks for your insight.
John Richeson---This is not what we were taught. We were taught from Romans that the old man is dead AND we were taught from Ephesians that we must constantly put off the old man. We were also taught that your old man is your old sin nature.
Your last line--yes. It is our minds that are the problem, not a nature of some kind that lives within us. This is important to understand from a practical standpoint because we know we can change our minds. If we think our "self destructive" thoughts and behavior are due to an irreconcilable sin nature within us, then we just think the internal conflict within us is unavoidable.
Bless.
I am not as sharp on biblical study as when I was younger but it seem like I f I recall this is kinda what we were taught anyway, wasn't it? What sets this study apart, Ken? (I keep wanting to call you John...sorry...that ain't good. )
Is this the part that stands out significantly?
He is not still rearing his ugly head to make our lives miserable. He is not a sin nature still at work within us. Our old man is dead. We are dead to sin.
If I recall, the analogy was that the "mean old man" would rear his ugly head from time and we would have to stomp him back down. I like your logic better. He's dead!.
Still, if I am self destructive at times I might imagine it (the old man ways) and allow my own mind to be the problem, right?
I am crucified with Christ: neverthless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
It's a good life.
