I know my homeowners insurance company, Allied, use to be known years ago by the acronym of AIDS....They not only changed that, but admitted to everybody in their note why they changed it...as if it weren't obvious.
And in the weather business, years ago when they went to the (then) new METAR coding, their codes for precipitation were RA for rain, SN for snow, PE for sleet(ice pellets), GR for hail, DZ for drizzle, and FZRA/FZDZ for freezing rain or freezing drizzle. That setup worked for as long as it took for several stations to come in with a mixture of rain and sleet, forcing them to change to PL for sleet. (put the original codes for rain and sleet together to find out why).
