It fits into another popular proverb, "the grass is always greener on the other side", of the fence or whatever separates one lawn from another, apparently. Sometimes it may very well be greener, no doubt. The temptation to admire it longingly and with envy could be strong. Boy howdy, what I couldn't do with a patch of grass like that or feelings to that effect.
"Switching horses mid stream" - another line comes to mind. Having never ridden a horse across a stream I can only assume that the experts would know.
Time and again over the last 20 years or so I've been love bombed with the latest trendy "change paradigm". Dilbert's is my favorite - "Change is good. You go first."
Dunno, there's a thought there somewhere. This time of year I find reason to appreciate certain....consistencies in my life. Things that are the way they are if left to me will continue to be so. Change may come in it's own way and time. God, may it be for the better, for all, is my own prayer, a tide that lifts all boats.
Here's that tune - it's well, it's what it is. : )
They're having a good time, that's for sure. "The Blues" are common to all people but the music is so uniquely American. I was listening to an internet radio stream recently, Russian station and it was all blues, much of it Russian. That really captured my heart for a bit.
Mike really captures some good thoughts in there, that hit home too. "If these are my blues then gimme some more!" he sings. Looking back on a life of both good times and bad I'd be hard pressed to cherry pick any out - well, there's a few that would be no-brainers but all in all, life's ups and downs form the fabric of a life that I can wear comfortably, albeit a bit snug in spots. But that will change over time too. : )
The line "I wouldn't swap it for anybody's, not even B.B.'s, Lightning's or Muddy's" is a classic. Those three men would be considered amongst the quintessential "bluesmen", well remembered and celebrated. (And in B.B.'s case, the beat goes on). But we are who we are and it's good to celebrate our own lives for what they are, triumphs, failures and all.
You're right Sarah, it is simple I think.
Years ago I first heard Mike Finnegan in the "Jerry Hahn Brotherhood" around 1970, '71. Mike came and played at one of Jim Doop's Mill Valley Sunday meetings, did a piano/vocal rendition of the song "I'm Satisfied". Cookin' Mama did a lot of opening spots for them. He was always friendly and pretty down to earth. Good 'n' funky. Sings - always had a great voice and cranked on that Hammond.
it's a pretty good one. The 'ole truck and 'ole me will be jamming down the road singing "What a life"
That's a nice rendetion and from a great group of musicians. So not all blues is bad. What A life indeed!
We really do have lots to be thankul for, John. I think part of the challenge in life is to be grateful for what we have at any given time yet always looking to improve. Helping others and giving of ourselves in some way seems to help in this regard.
HAPPY holidays!
