  • Paul, old buddy! Drat the luck I never knew you lived in Oakland all those years. I used to go up there to watch my buddy Reid play drums in his punk rock band at little dive bars. Coming from lily-white Los Gatos, I remember thinking, "Wow, and I thought San Jose was diverse."

I went up there once to Yoshi's, that hopping jazz club, and as I stood in line for the next show, Danny Glover came walking out. He saw some friend of his and laughed and embraced him and said, "I still got that tie! I still got that tie!" I don't know what the in-joke was, but they were both roaring.

I have fond memories of Anchorage -- I spent two weeks in a hospital there at the age of 13 with a loathsome skin disease. I went to the 8th grade in Kodiak, and I would have distinguished myself by going to the state wrestling championship in Fairbanks if not for my untimely hospitalization.

And I hate to say it (and hope your experience is different), but having lived in four countries and eight states, Alaska is the unfriendliest place I ever lived. Maybe it's a protective bias against lower-48ers .... or maybe everyone remembers the 8th grade that way.

Next time you're in California, I hope you drop me a line!

    Love, Karl
  • A mutual fan of Steeleye Span and The Princess Bride? INCONCEIVABLE!!! (If that means what I think it means.) Next you're gonna tell me that you like Panda brand black licorice.
  • Hey Paul,

I got the message this morning that you aren't here. I hit the rack last night by eight oclock in that I rise at 0400 to be ready for work by 0600. Was it the weather? We were socked in with fog all day yesterday, and so I am thinking that the lousy S.E. Alaska weather put the halt to your visit. Anyway, we'll catch you on the next visit. And make sure to tell Molly not to worry! We love her! Bless you too man, and tell Bonnie I said hi as well. I've always remember her because of the way Richard Thomas used to tease her in residence.

  • Yep...you and David go waaaay back. I'll tell him you said hi. He'll probably sign on eventually.

Bonsai...very cool. I still do floral design part-time and still love it.
  • I love the tenderness of your heart. I do not regret one minute of my training. We gave it everything we had. It was the greatest thing that ever happened to me and I would not be the person I am today if it wasn't for what I learned.
  • Thought about what you said regarding so many Floridians. It has been hot for a very long time and any connection with any one who lives in the cold, we can live through vicariously. Plus most of us are from families of emigrants, so we wander. Land mail vs. wireless, no question.
Plus you are loved by many.
    Joy
  • Hi Paul, I've been in southern CA over 20 years, this time. I've been in the same house for the last 10 years. I really like the climate. I grew up in Ohio.

This is a really wonderful way for all of us to reconnect again with each other. Others have mentioned that it's akin to what the return will be like. I think it's absolutely terrific to be able to communicate with old friends this way! Betsy
  • Hi Paul,

You were so much fun to hang out with. I'm not nervous about eating those cornich hens now. I eat them in one bite and just spew the bones out.

  • Hello Hello Hello Hello (you coal black smith). How's it going? I've got a few Steeleye Span CDs too. I haven't run into many people who've heard of them either. I introduced them to one of my good friends by mixing him a CD from mp3s. I entitled it "Something you don't hear everyday." It's good to hear from you. God bless!
