What is True Worship? - Thanksgiving 2021

What is True Worship?

V.P. Wierwille
PFAL Series

I am sure that you have asked yourself many, many times as you’ve observed different religious groups, different churches, different denominations:  just what is worship?

Some churches have altars, they have candles, incense, holy water; other denominations have no symbols at all. You have certainly noticed so many variations that you have thought many times, “If that’s the way they worship, why does another group worship so differently?” Each group may have a kernel of truth, but such diversity of religious ritual among Christian believers cannot all be in alignment with The Word.

What is true worship? The verses that are critically important to understand are spoken by Jesus in John 4.

John 4:22-24:

Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.

But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

Jesus said, “Ye worship ye know not what. . .”  I believe that is true for most people.

Everybody worships. The question is: Are we worshipping rightly? Do we know what, how or why we worship?

Jesus said about worship that “the hour cometh. . .when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit [The word “in” is the same Greek word translated “by,” “by spirit.”] and in truth.”

Worship the Father how?

You shall worship Him not by candles, not by altars, not by Bible reading, not by singing, but by the spirit.

“. . .In spirit and in truth. . .” is the figure of speech hendiadys: two nouns used but one thing meant. “Spirit” is a noun and “truth” is a noun, the double noun being used to doubly emphasize that it is spiritually true, or truly spiritual. The Father seeketh a true worshipper to worship thus—in spirit and in truth. If we can find out what it is to worship God by the spirit, we know how to truly worship.

The question is not what anybody thinks, but what does The Word say? There have been so many ideas brought to Christianity that it is often difficult for even Biblical scholars to distinguish between that which is genuine and that which is counterfeit. In other words, it is hard to separate that which is truly Christianity from that which is religion. Religion is what man has Introduced.

There is much religion in so-called Christianity, but Christianity does not literally have one ounce of religion in it. Unless you know the difference between religion and Christianity, you will become very confused.

Christianity, in a nut shell, is what God wrought in Christ. Christianity is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

The Bible teaches that God is Spirit and that we are to worship Him in spirit and in truth. Jesus told this truth when He spoke to the Samaritan woman. In John 4:20 the woman said to Jesus, “Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.” Jesus replied in verse 21, “. . .Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.”  How then shall He be worshipped?

Philippians 3:3:

For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.

This is true worship. The called-of-God are those who “worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus.”

We rejoice in Christ Jesus, not in Jesus Christ. There is a great difference. We do not rejoice in the humiliated one, Jesus, but in the glorified Christ.

Our rejoicing, our worshipping is in the resurrected Christ. Our rejoicing is not in that Jesus who was spit on or slapped or persecuted or derided.

We rejoice that He was more than a conqueror, that He overcame and ascended up into heaven, that He is seated at the right hand of God and that on the day of Pentecost He sent “. . .forth this, which ye now see and hear,” as stated in Acts 2:33. Rejoice about Christ Jesus, the humiliated one who has been resurrected and has ascended into glory.

To worship is to rejoice in Christ Jesus for what He did, not what we do because the flesh is weak. Do not judge men by the flesh. Have no confidence, trust, reliance nor believing in the flesh. The flesh is so weak that John 6:63 says, “. . .the flesh profiteth nothing. . . .”  When we have confidence in the flesh, we may assess one man to be better than another on the basis of appearance. Yet, if men are born again of God’s Spirit, whose children are they? God’s! In God’s sight they are equally precious.

There are many things going on under the guise of Christianity which are nothing more than having “confidence in the flesh.” But we truly have our confidence in what God wrought in Christ Jesus. Christ Jesus made us presentable to worship God.

Colossians 1:12:

Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet [adequate] to be partakers [to share fully] of the inheritance of the saints in light.

Matthew 15 gives an account of worship, but again it is not true worship.

Matthew 15:6-9:

. . .Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.

Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.

But in vain they do worship me, teaching for Doctrines the commandments of men.

Did their worship look genuine? Did they go through religious ritual? Judging by the flesh, we would have given them the stamp of approval. But what did the Lord say? “In vain they do worship me.”  Why did they worship in vain? Because they were “. . .teaching for Doctrines the commandments of men.”

Another example of vain worship is recorded in Mark.

Mark 7:5-9:

Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands?

He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.

And he said unto them, Full well [with full knowedge] ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.

What kind of worship is this? Vain worship. Simply performing the traditions of men, a hollow act.

Romans 1:25:

Who [people] changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator. . . .

They worshipped man more than they worshipped God. Vain worship has been going on for a long time. The children of Israel wandered from God and worshipped in vain. In Acts 7 and Revelation 9 the children of Israel rejecting the preaching of their man of God, Moses, and worshipping devil spirits is recorded.

Acts 7:40-47:

Saying unto Aaron, [the children of Israel said to Aaron], Make us gods to go before us: for as for this Moses, which brought us out of the land of Egypt, we wot [know] not what is become of him.

And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifices unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.

Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven [devil spirits]; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness?

Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them. . . .

Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as he had appointed, speaking unto Moses, that he should make it according to the fashion That he had seen.

Which also our fathers that came after brought In with Jesus into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drave out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David;

Who found favour before God, and desired to Find a  tabernacle for the God of Jacob.

But Solomon built him an house.

Revelation 9:20:

And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk.

Worshipping the devil and devil spirits and everything related to them is worshipping in vain. Satan tried cajoling even Jesus himself into worshipping in vain.

Matthew 4:8, 9:

Again, the devil taketh him [Jesus] up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;

And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

The greatest victory for the devil would have been to have Jesus worship him. As human beings, we have two, and only two, alternatives of worship—the true God and the devil. If we worship the true God in spirit we and rejoice in Christ Jesus, we have no confidence in the flesh.

If things surrounding us look black and society seems worse and worse, do not get excited, but stand on the promises of God and worship God in spirit and in truth. No good end can come to those who worship anything but the true.

Revelation 19:20:

And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

This destruction can easily be avoided; we must worship God.

Revelation 22:9:

Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.

How are we going to worship God by the spirit if we are not born again of God’s Spirit? It is impossible. If we are born again of God’s Spirit, filled with the power of the holy spirit, we can worship the true God by the spirit. And to worship by the spirit we must operate a manifestation of the holy spirit. The manifestation of the spirit which produces true worship is speaking in tongues.

When we worship God by way of speaking in tongues, it is “speaking unto God.”

I Corinthians 14:2:

For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God. . . .

Speaking in tongues is speaking the “wonderful works of God.”

Acts 2:11:

Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.

Speaking in tongues is “magnifying God.”

Acts 10:46:

For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. . .

Speaking in tongues is praying perfectly.

Romans 8:26:

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us. . . .

Speaking in tongues is giving thanks well.

I Corinthians 14:17:

For thou verily givest thanks well. . . .

Speaking in tongues is worshipping “in [by] Spirit and in truth.” Speaking in tongues is true worship. God who is Spirit is communicating to his gift of holy spirit which is His new creation in me. In other words, God’s Spirit speaking to my spirit as evidenced by speaking in tongues is truly worship. How beautiful and yet how misunderstood worship has become.

Not Ignorant

The phrase “not have you to be ignorant” appears seven times in the New Testament. A study of this phrase is the subject article.

Rom 1;13

Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles.

It is necessary to observe to whom the Apostle Paul is addressing in order to comprehend this verse. Paul desired to “come unto” those at Rome to the end that “some fruit” may be among them. Here is a figure of speech. Paul can not be talking about sharing a bowl of ambrosia with them. The word Fruit is the Greek word karpon, Here used in the accusative singular.

This first use of this also used as a figure of speech is {n Math 3:8

Math 3:4-8

In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, 2And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 3For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 4And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey. 5Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan, 6And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins. 7But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:

In Verse 3:8 metonomy is the figure the noun fruits is used to imply actions, the actions needed to be taken by the Pharisees and Sadducees who had come to water baptized. John told them this was not enough, They needed to bring forth actions meet (adequate) for repentance. For a person to bring forth such fruit is always a good thing.

Paul Desired spiritual Fruit to be manifested by a particular group addressed in this church epistle. Let us reread.

Rom 1;13

Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles.

Those instructed in the order and overview of the New Testament epistles will recognize the book of Romans as the first and foundational Church epistle, which it is, but at times Paul will address others as is the case in verse 1:13. The members of the born again Church are not the gentiles.

The word translated here as gentiles is the Greek word ethnesin translated as nations in the King James Version.

Acts 14 :16

Who in times past suffered all nations(ethnesin) to walk in their own ways.

Acts 17:26

And hath made of one blood all nations(ethnesin) of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

Romans 16:26

But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations(ethnesin) for the obedience of faith:

Paul desired that even the uninstructed dwelling in the Roman areas benefit to the end their lives may produce “fruit”. The fruit of the spirt are listed in the book of Galatians.

Galatians 5:19-25

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. 22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. 24And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. 25If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

The revelation that is the Book of Romans is more than sufficient that any in the nations may share love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance.

It simply need to be read, understood and acted upon.

I Cor 10:1

Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;

Let us read the record the Apostle Paul is referring to :

14:13

And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.

14:14

The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.

14:15

And the LORD said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward:

14:16

But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea.

14:17

And I, behold, I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall follow them: and I will get me honour upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen.

14:18

And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I have gotten me honour upon Pharaoh, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen.

14:19

And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them:

14:20

And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these: so that the one came not near the other all the night.

14:21

And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided.

14:22

And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.

14:23

And the Egyptians pursued, and went in after them to the midst of the sea, even all Pharaoh's horses, his chariots, and his horsemen.

14:24

And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the LORD looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians,

14:25

And took off their chariot wheels, that they drave them heavily: so that the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel; for the LORD fighteth for them against the Egyptians.

14:26

And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the sea, that the waters may come again upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen.

14:27

And Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to his strength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled against it; and the LORD overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea.

14:28

And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them; there remained not so much as one of them.

14:29

But the children of Israel walked upon dry land in the midst of the sea; and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.

14:30

Thus the LORD saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the sea shore.

14:31

And Israel saw that great work which the LORD did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the LORD, and believed the LORD, and his servant Moses.

Here we have a major event. It is not often that God changes the Laws of physics ( walls of water parting ) But at this time God did to make some very powerful help to his believing Israelites. The Apostle Paul calls them “our fathers”. The Cloud provided guidance and protection to Israel at this time of need.

What has this to do with you and Me ?

1 cor 1:1,2,3

Paul called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother,

Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both their's and our's:

Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

If you call upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ the contents of the book of Corinthians are addressed to you. The section of Corinthians at 10:1 illustrates a promise from God realized.

I Cor 10:1

Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;

The next matter to consider is also in the book of Corinthians :

I Cor 12 :1

Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.

Note that in the KJV certain words a in italics as is gifts Here in 1 Cor 12:1

The King James translators put words in italics that had none supplied in the original Greek or Aramaic texts to inform the reader this word is added.

From a work by Kent P. JacksonFrank F. Judd Jr., and David Rolph Seely

The use of italics in today’s King James Bible has an interesting but complex history.[37] The practice of using different type within a text for various reasons seems to have begun in the early part of the sixteenth century. During the years 1534–35, Sebastian Münster and Pierre Robert Olivetan—who printed Latin and French translations of the Bible, respectively—were two of the earliest individuals to indicate, by means of a different type, words in the translation not represented precisely in the exemplar. The first English Bible to follow this practice was the Great Bible, which was printed in 1539 under the editorship of Miles Coverdale, who made use of both Münster’s Latin and Olivetan’s French translations. In this English translation, which was printed in black-letter type, Coverdale employed both brackets and a smaller font to indicate variant readings from the Latin Vulgate that were not in the Hebrew or Greek manuscripts.

Sometimes a word is needed to add clarity, sometimes it is not correctly supplied, In Cor 12:1 the translation should omit the word “gifts” because the word in the verse “spiritual” is from the Greek: pneumatikos,  meaning “that which belongs to, is determined by, influenced by, or proceeds from the Spirt.

A concise literal translation could be : Now concerning spiritual matters brethren, I would not have you to be uninformed.

The Apostle Paul then continues to inform us concerning the manifestations of the spirt available to the Church and the benefits.

2 Cor 1:8

For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life:

Here is the record of the event the apostle Paul is referring :

19:20

So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.

19:21

After these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome.

19:22

So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timotheus and Erastus; but he himself stayed in Asia for a season.

19:23

And the same time there arose no small stir about that way.

19:24

For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen;

19:25

Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth.

19:26

Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands:

19:27

So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.

19:28

And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.

19:29

And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul's companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre.

19:30

And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.

19:31

And certain of the chief of Asia, which were his friends, sent unto him, desiring him that he would not adventure himself into the theatre.

19:32

Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together.

19:33

And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made his defence unto the people.

19:34

But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.

19:35

And when the townclerk had appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?

19:36

Seeing then that these things cannot be spoken against, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.

19:37

For ye have brought hither these men, which are neither robbers of churches, nor yet blasphemers of your goddess.

19:38

Wherefore if Demetrius, and the craftsmen which are with him, have a matter against any man, the law is open, and there are deputies: let them implead one another.

19:39

But if ye enquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly.

19:40

For we are in danger to be called in question for this day's uproar, there being no cause whereby we may give an account of this concourse.

19:41

And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.

The Apostle Paul and his companions in travel have generated a life threatening situation for themselves simply by the words they spoke. If you want to get people angry, negatively effect their income. Paul’s teaching had the potential to immediately do just that. If you want to get people even more angry, devalue their religion. The Apostle Paul as any law understanding Pharisee (Phil 3:5) was against any form of idolatry including the worship of Dianna. God did rescue Paul and the others from this situation this is one thing Paul did not want the church ignorant concerning.

The next verse to consider is clearly addressed to the Christian body of believers, the church.

1 Thes 4:13

But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

The “brethren” the Apostle is addressing are the people who believe in the resurrection of Christ and are endeavoring to walk by the spirt.

This verse contains a figure of speech called an euphemism. Figures of speech are easy to spot in the bible. Here is a rule for correct biblical interpretation:

The Bible is to be taken literally when ever and where ever possible if it can not be then a figure of speech is being employed.

A euphemism is an indirect or innocuous word or phrase used instead of something considered unpleasant, harsh or sensitive, or embarrassing. Source: theidioms.com

Here the phrase “them which are asleep” is the euphemism. Further intensified by the use of the Greek word koimaomai that means to fall asleep unintentionally. Obviously the ones referred to as asleep are dead, The Apostle is bringing to mind what has happened to these people and what will happen to them and to the members of the church who will be alive at our Lords return.

13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

In the 14TH verse the euphemism appears again “sleep in Jesus” The God inspired choice of the word “sleep” is quite revealing, It tells something about the state of awareness that the dead in Christ are experiencing now. They are not conscience.

Ecclesiastes 9:1-10

For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them.

All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.

This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.

For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.

For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun

Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works.

Let thy garments be always white; and let thy head lack no ointment.

Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.

10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

These verses tell us of the state of the dead where all would remain if it were not for the return of Christ. When the Messiah returns the dead in Christ wake up ! Then they are aware.

15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent (should be precede) them which are asleep.

16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

These events happen quickly one after another. As do the following :

17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

More detail about the first return of Jesus can be found in the book of Corinthians.

1 Cor 15:10-26

10 But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.

11 Therefore whether it were I or they, so we preach, and so ye believed.

12 Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?

13 But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen:

14 And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.

15 Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.

16 For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised:

17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.

18 Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.

19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.

20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.

21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.

22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming.

24 Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.

25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.

26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

In verse 23 Christ is called the Firstfruits. The use is very reveling in context with the other verses on the subject. Study will reveal that at this time (now) no one who has ever been risen from the dead (for instance Lazareth) is still alive except Jesus Christ. His work for God has not ended.

Acts 1:1

The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,

Notice that the verse says Jesus began to do and teach, He is not done doing and teaching. More details are in 1 Cor 13:10-13

1 Cor 13:10-13

10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.

The perfect one to come is the resurrected Lord Jesus Christ. Some in error teach that He has come already. This can not be for many reasons, for one, we are promised in verse 12 that we shall Know as we are known. This wonderful promise is yet to be fulfilled.

11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

1 Cor 15: 20-26

What a fantastic thing it is to know you are a member of the body of Christ looking forward to the return of the Messiah with hope.

2 Pet 3:8

But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

The context is the key to determining the correct understanding of this passage, especially the comparison of a thousand years to one day. The context of 2 Peter 3 is the return of the Lord to deliver His people. Peter tells the persecuted believers that scoffers will come and mock the idea that the Lord will return. They will say something like, “He’s been gone a long time; He’s not ever coming back” (see verse 4). As Christians are persecuted and continue to look for the Lord to deliver them, it does appear as though His coming is “delayed.”

Peter reminds the believers not to lose heart because God is working on a different timetable. For a human being, if something doesn’t happen within a matter of years, then we may miss it. God, however, is not limited by the same constraints of time because “with the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.” Time is simply not an issue with God because He has an unlimited amount of it. If the average person sees something in the store, it would make no difference whether it cost a penny or a dime, even though one is ten times more expensive than the other. If a billionaire wanted to buy a piece of property it might make no difference to him whether it cost $50,000 or $500,000 or even $5,000,000. This is the idea of the verse—both a day and a thousand years are such miniscule amounts of time to God that it really makes no difference to Him.

Romans 11:25

25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.

All the gentiles who are going to believe in the resurrection of Christ have not. They may as of now not been born. The fullness of the gentiles refers to these gentiles who when all that are going to believe have believed. God con not determine the time period. This is dependent on the free will of the gentiles involved. God because of his foreknowledge does know when the last gentile who will believe has believed. At this time the return for the Church can justly happen.
God must be just to all humanity and so is in the last times.

1 Thes 4:14-18

13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

This concludes the study of the phrase “not ignorant” in the New Testament.
