"We were up there the beginning of April. I drove my mother to see some old friends of hers from Tacoma to Issaquah. It was my 50th and time for Mom to see some old friends while she still can and they are still around. It was a really nice trip for…"
"I worked for your mother in the Wierwille home my last year in residence (wc 16). It was a great privilege and blessing to work there. I have fond memories of Mrs. Wierwille and of you and Kevin. I still scrub my floors on my hands and knees :-)"
"Sounds like us. We will paint anything We too stay away from the bigger stuff, especially with time constraints. We still tackle some pretty big jobs now and then. Your kids have great aspirations! How old is the oldest?
"Just 2. I ran a crew in the 90's. It was less artsy and more production, really not my bag. I prefer to be more detailed than what we call "blow and go " here. I am a much better painter than business person. We just go to work and do the best job…"
"There are pros and cons to the specialization, We will paint anything! Most of our painting is in the more affluent areas of Sac, we drive a lot. Minimum of 30 miles to start our day. Painting has always been a great outlet for me. It is somewhat…"
"We try to not do any exteriors from October to around March, but sometimes it just doesn't work out, as you probably remember from your time in Ca. that it does like to rain alot and we have fog. We are staying busy though. Our main area of…"
"Hey val, how are you? Wow you have a good memory. I went to Cody Wyoming. I then Went back home to Arizona for a short time and then to California, been here since '92. We used to go to Chicago in the summers when I was a kid. One of my Mom's…"
A little house sounds good--not so much work as a larger one. It's good that you enjoy your work and have the freedom to do that. Plus, you can paint anywhere, although it does take time to build up a business. How many of you are there?
I remember lots of fog, of course. But the second time I lived in San Francisco was during a drought, so we had no rain to speak of. Or at least very, very little. We had to ration water--army showers, etc. The first time I was a kid, and I grew up in a part of BC where it rains almost as much as it does in Seattle (we get a bit less thanks to the island effect--Nanaimo gets less than the west coast of the island, too.)
Cabinet finishes sound good, and that's one huge kitchen. There's not much market where we live for just doing that, but specializing can be very helpful. I forgot at first that you're in Sacramento, where the winters are cooler than in southern CA. We get snow around here, although not nearly as much as most of the state because we're relatively close to the ocean and have a milder climate as a result.
Arizona and horses sound great. We have winter here, so it's indoor painting only. Karsten has been busy this month, which we're thankful for. I've driven thorugh Montana, and lived in the Bay area 3 years growing up (2 as a kid, and 1 in high school--most of it in San Francisco, but half a year in Vallejo.) I don't think I've ever been to Arizona, but if we didn't have kids and a house, it's a place I'd like to see and maybe live in.
We had a couple of horses in BC when I was growing up, but I was never a good rider, so our hourse would never go past a lope for me. He'd gallop and run for my sister, though, who was a much better rider (western only in our family.)
My parents can see Nanaimo from their front windows as they live on the mainland of BC right across from the Island. I never thought I'd end up on the east coast of the US, either!
Hey Kristal, Remember me. Val Feld now Kimmel. I am living in Chicago area. I was glad to see you on this sight. It is great to know how friends from long ago are doing today.
I just heard of Eric's loss and my heart goes out to him.
What have you been up to. Last I thought you were going to Sterling Wyoming. Something like that. Amy who just trying to catch up. Bless you much Val
Karsten was quiet when he was inresidence. Peoplel thought he was shy, but he says he never was, and I believe him. Sometimes quiet people are considered shy. he's about 6 feet, slim, had brown hair back then and wore glasses. I don't remember where he was his first year inresidence, and I didn't meet him until later.
It is interesting to see where we all are now. I was so sure I'd stay in Canada for the rest of my life, for one thing, and I've been living in the States since I got married.
Karsten (did you know him? 18th Corps) is also working as a painter, since he makes more money this way than he would in Forestry around here. I won't be on this forum so often once this first burst is over, but it's been fun to get in touch with people again.
Hi Kristal,
Getting a place ready is a lot of work. I've been happy reconnecting here, but normally can't possibly do this every day--so much to do. Those years inresidence were formidable, but I remember learning a lot, too. Is that our place in your photos? I thought you might be working as a painter or something.
